Challenge 1 'One Effect' Reviews
alita031 - Your video was really well constructed. The song choice was good, and you were able to keep a simple but flawless editing through the whole video. The crescendo of the song is evident and you emphasized it even more, like at 1:07 - 1:09. The choice of your one effect was one easy to use, but you used it well. The use of the other allowed elements very good as wells such at 0:49 - 0:56. You portrayed the movie very well and focused on the emotions. Even to a viewer who may not know the story, the emotions are felt and the clip selection was perfect; keeping the viewer interested till the last minute. Congratulations, you pass to the next round!
missfrenki - First of all, the song choice was fantastic. Referring to your description, the fandoms aren’t important in this competition. We are really objective and even though House is not a familiar fandom to all of us, the video is really interesting. Thanks to the song, that felt perfect for the story you are portraying and the clips selection, even a viewer completely unfamiliar with the fandom understands what your video it is about, and feels for the character. This is no easy accomplishment. The choice of the effect didn’t take us by surprise at first, we were expecting some editors to choose a FX which could vary the original coloring, but you used it really well. The dark coloring you created reflects the mood of the video. Your editing was really good, especially at 0:23 - 0:46, but a little too static in others, such as 2:05 - 2:14. However, your video was really well made and the task of the challenge was accomplished well. Congratulations!
xBlackKissx - Congratulations for passing through the next round! We all thought the best part of your video was the ending. Knowing the song, and seeing the length of the video, we imagined an end a little difficult to make. However, you cut the song really well and the clips at the finish are so well put, it makes a great impression. The first part of the video was slightly iffy. After few seconds, we realized it was about the transitions/dissolvences. They were a little off from the beats and the fade outs should have been longer. It feels like the flow of the editing is a little too fast at the beginning. However, after the first half of the video, you found a good tempo and you kept it. The fandom chosen was a good choice when it comes to the coloring of the clips, which you edited well, and the velocity is very well used.
thelostcandy - Your video was a lovely discover. You made a couple video, a very sweet one, with a sweet song as well, but somehow you managed to do something really light and full of emotions, but not cheesy or boring at all. That’s unusual and we all liked your video. There are some defects and you should have used more of your chosen effect. It doesn’t show much, but when it does, you used it really well, like at 0:47. Unfortunately, the watermarks of the shows really disturb the videos, especially when you zoom in/out a lot like you did, so that’s take a little away from the esthetic of the whole video. The clip selection is great, although, the transitions could have been used better. The task could have been accomplished better as well since you didn’t use your effect very much, and the other allowed FX didn't show up, but overall, your video was really good. Congratulations!
SapphireOrb - Your video was one of the best for this round. It was almost a favorite and we all loved it a lot. It has so many emotions in it; it is light and dark at the same time, and it expresses hope and sadness. Even though glee is not followed by all the judges, everyone agreed on your ability to show the true nature of the character you are portraying. The song choice is an overused one, but it totally fits the atmosphere and the meaning of the video. Your effect could have been used better though. The slowed down clips are evident and they fit, however it comes to think that maybe it could have been better to choose a more advanced transition type instead of velocity since you have been using them a lot and the additive effect feels a little too raw in the video. Anyway, your video was very much appreciated. Congratulations!
SeekThenHide - The song you chose is really powerful and it definitely requires a slow down of the clips, so it’s no surprise you chose velocity as your one effect. We thought the freezing of the clips at the end, before the fade out, was really a nice touch and when you stopped using it all of a sudden, after only two times, it leaves the viewer a little disappointed. However, you kept the flow of the editing steady, but with nice variations. The use of the pan crop was really clever since it gives the slowed down clips more movement, and it’s also beautiful to watch the overused tvd clips in another way. The match of the lyrics was great, such as 1:10 - 1:15 and 1:29 - 1.31. The maximum depth of the song at 0:59 - 1:07 was really well edited. You pass through the next round!
yulivee94 - We were very interested to see an au for this round! It definitely wasn’t an easy pick for an editor. With the chance of using one effect only, an au/crossover can be a very hard task. However, it would have helped to use some FX like masking or cookie cutter. It is clear some clips needed to be more edited to create a more plausible manipulation, but at the end, you were really capable of making a good AU with really few elements at your disposal. The velocity was used well. The whole video keeps a slow pace and it has a nice flow, helped by a really good use of the transitions. The use of the text for the words ‘say when’ and ‘tonight’ felt unnecessary and the major fast points of the song such as 0:51 - 0:53 and 1:58 - 2:01 could have been edited better. However, your editing is really good and the manipulations are really well made. The clip selection was perfect for both of the shows. Congratulations!
daisyfevers - The song choice was really original and when the video starts it really glues your eyes to the screen. The first half of the video until 0:53 is so well edited! It’s really flawless and the clip selection is fantastic, everything feels right and after 0:53 there is a huge change. You shifted your previous fast and beats followed editing to a slow one and the change it is really visually clear. It seems like the second part of the video is rushed and it doesn’t keep up to the great editing of the first part which is a shame because you had it all right. There isn’t much evidence of the use of the chosen effect but it’s more because the song, being so fast, doesn’t allow one to focus on it, but it becomes clear that the clips were slowed down in more than one part of the video. Congratulations you pass through the next round.
SeverusSnapehasmyhea - Your entry was quite something. We were expecting loads of slow videos and some funny ones but you definitely surprised us by using such a fast meaningless song! Everyone was in search of emotions and you gave us a super fast edited video. Your pick was interesting and your way of thinking outside the box was appreciated. The effect chosen was really well used, considering it is also hard to use velocity on smaller clips. The beats were followed so well, and it doesn’t feel like you exaggerate with them, not once. It is clear you had in mind the tempo of the song. The clip selection was brilliant and it was good seeing some less vidded clips there. We were a little disappointed by the length of some entries and yours was definitely the smallest. However when we talk about length, we mean that some songs should not been chosen to then be cut on the best part, but your pick was definitely smart in that way as well. It’s not badly cut or too small. It’s just right. The video is fun and the editing is great. Congratulations, you pass this round!
harryginnyloveforeve - Your video was viewed several times. It was particularly liked by a judge and that’s why you are moving to the next round, but you should know it was discussed a lot. The reason is that it is clear you could have done much better. We never take into account the other videos of an editor, we do consider only the entry of that specific round, but your video screams ability. It is clear you are no beginner. As confirmed in your description the problem was the lack of time due to the lateness of your start on the entry, and it is evident in the video that you rushed to make something that could have done much better. However, your chosen effect was used well and it was present through the whole video. Some clips should have been lightened a little bit more, considering tv simulator tends to darken the clips on its own. The song was a good pick and it reflects the type of character you chose. 0:32 - 0:37 was really well made. You pass through the next round.
TheBurningWolf - Two au’s for this challenge were a big surprise for us. It is not an easy pick for this type of challenge. The story you decided to portray it is easily understandable even to a viewer unfamiliar to the fandom due the good use of the voiceovers. Some clips could have been better putted like at 0:22 - 0:26 and 0:30. Not all the judges agreed on your grades but two of us thought very well of your video. The way you used your chosen effect and the voiceovers were definitely the best elements of your entry. That’s why the task was accomplished well. Your chosen effect appear several times and it was used cleverly. The flashbacks of Dean’s torture to Castiel were emphasized by the static effect, and the use of the sound effects such as at 0:32 - 0:34 was impressive. The manipulations are really good. The use of the text at 1:16 felt a little raw due to the font used and the large zooming. The end with the two clips of Castiel was a little off, we thought it wasn’t really needed and you could have ended the video with the final Dean quote. However, the video was well made and you pass trough the next round.
SweetLadyBat - First of all, congratulations for being a judge’s favorite for this round! Your video was very much appreciated especially by two judges; the way you related the song/sounds to the fandom is brilliant. It is actually a really hard risk chose a song that is so famous because of a specific movie and then use it for something else; it is difficult to make the viewer focus on your video while it plays a song that reminds of a different fandom. However, you were able to accomplish this very well. Your introduction of some sounds was made at the right moment and it gives a stronger sense to the clips like at the very beginning (0:04) or 0:20 or even better 0:42 and 1:07. You followed the song lyrics very well, almost using them as a sort of suggestion to emphasize the direction you wanted to give to the storyline. It really impress the viewer, even a one unfamiliar with the fandom. The use of the chosen effect was also good even if not particularly remarked how the video progress as much as it is in the beginning. The clip selection was absolutely fitting and it was really interesting to see how you repeated some scenes already used in the beginning at 0:54 - 0:55 before the big break out of the plot. The song could have been cutted better at 1:08, it disturb the flow of the video. However, you corrected that pretty fast at 1:12 and used a very strong scene and that brings the viewer attention to the video once again. Overall, your video is intense and well made.
AAGarbman - Your video was particularly liked by one judge, so you passed the round. Your one effect choice was original and we appreciated that. It was also fitting to the song even though we did see other videos on this song used to emphasize the words of it linking them to a fandom (the soldier, the civilian etc). However, the effect you chose was used well and through the whole video; especially the font chosen was very fitting to the three fandoms you used, which were very good linked by one another as well. At first you used a fade out to the text and then, all the sudden you stopped. We thought it would have been better for you to keep using it due to the fact that without it, the text looks cutted too suddenly. The clips selection was really good and so it was the editing, simple but effective. Congratulations, you pass trough the next round of BOIT!
Estaaas - Congratulations to passing trough the next round. Your chosen effect was used really well and trough the whole video which was one of the most important part to accomplish for this task; however you didn’t make use of anything else in particular beside fx to correct some coloring. In your case this was pretty understandable since the video doesn’t appear to need something more. The internal movements were quite good and the song allowed you to focus on some sounds which you used well with the clip selection like at 0:14. The video is good although it could have been better; however your editing is likeable and so is the use of the effect chosen.
Nyah86Production- Congrats for not only passing this round, but for also being a judge's favorite! We really loved the story you showed in your video and how convincing it was. The video itself was very powerful and emotional. We were able to feel Dean's pain as he was writing his suicide note. The voiceovers and the typing effects were the perfect touch to top off this video, especially when you did a repeat of the line of "I want to kill myself." You're chosen effect, despite not being overly noticeable, was still used really well to help slow the pacing of your entry. Overall, you did a great job this round and that is why you are moving on!
AloraVideos - We agreed that out of all of the entries that used velocity, yours was the best executed. We really enjoyed your editing and pacing in your video. The fact that not all of us, if any, are not very familiar with Xena, but still understood how dynamic her relationship is with Gabrielle. Congrats for a great entry and for moving on to the next round!
MytubeProductions1- It was definitely unexpected to see someone use an effect relating to the coloring, but still refreshing. We can easily say, you put your chosen effect to very good use. The coloring you created really fits the dreariness of the song. As well as the coloring, your editing followed the song completely, even down to the lyrical interpretation. We really enjoyed what you did with your entry and because of that, you are going on to round two!
SolitaryAngel917- We really felt that your video had a nice flow of pacing and that the editing really matched up well with the song. Your chosen effect was used well in your entry. However, I felt that a different effect could have been chosen to add that extra spark to the video. Also, the end of the video could have been closed in a better way, because it felt abrupt. Regardless, we still liked your entry! Congrats for making it to round two!
Dzhelina- This is definitely a clever entry. The editing was very well done, and a pleasant surprise when in comparison to the other entries. The effect was used to perfection and the video in general was a lot of fun to watch. Despite the video being amusing, I didn't like that it abruptly ended. However, we still enjoyed your entry enough to pass you to the next round. Congrats!
agentofCHAOS13x- Congrats for moving on to the next round! We really enjoyed the pacing of your video and how well the scene selections seemed to match with your song choice. Your chosen effect was slow motion and we believe that you used it really well throughout the video. Overall, we really liked your entry!
Naphie88- We really like what you did in this video. It had nice pacing and the voiceovers really added to the mood of the song, as well as gave us something else to focus on, since the song is an instrumental. Your scene selections were really good for what you were trying to portray with your included voiceovers. We felt that you made good use of your chosen effect, velocity, since it helped your editing really match up to the song. Nicely done and congrats!
KangaRooInc- We really like the pacing of your vid and the internal movement that you included in. Your chosen effect, velocity, was used really well throughout the video and you editing style really worked for your song choice. We did feel that the video's ending could have been done better but we still enjoyed your video overall. Congrats for passing this round!
triinu127- We had a few mixed views about this entry, but we could definitely see how different the editing style is. The distorted feel of the velocity changes really gave the illusion of a dream and we liked how we could tell when the dream began and ended. The scene selections worked for what you were trying to portray and your chosen effect, velocity, was definitely used effectively throughout the video. However, your other used effects, pan+crop and overlaying, could have been used in a cleaner way. Regardless, we are pushing you to the next round. Congrats!
irydionlover93- The style of your video was really beautifully done. The movie you chose to use really did justice to the editing style and song you used in your entry. Your effect, gaussian blur, was used efficiently throughout, and you made the effect really blend in with the beauty of the scenes you chose. Overall, really great job and congrats!
FearlessProdz- You did a really nice job on your entry. The scene selections really worked with the song, to the point where we could follow along (despite not being familiar with the fandom). We also liked the voiceovers and the overlaying "memories/flashback" sequence you did at the beginning. Your pacing could have been a bit better and your chosen effect, motion blur, made some things a bit hard to focus on but otherwise, nice job! Congrats on passing this round!
ChemAttraction- This wasn't a favorite for all the judges but we still felt strongly enough about it pass it through. We really enjoyed your song choice and your timing throughout the video was very on point. Your chosen effect, motion blur, was well executed but it also felt like it was taking away from the video a bit, since your editing was so fast paced. In general, we did enjoy your entry and we can't wait to see your next one. Congrats!
WinterAffair- We felt that you did a nice job on your entry this round. Your chosen effect, velocity/slow motion, was used really well throughout and it helped your chosen scenes to fit the pacing of your song. We did feel that a little more could have been added to the video to give it an extra spark, since the song is an instrumental, like voiceovers to help explain the relationship you were showing in your entry. Overall, good job and congrats!
Shanice12OTH- We thought your video was really fun to watch! The scene choices were great and it was definitely one of our few less emotional entries. The song choice was refreshing and your chosen effect, velocity, was used effectively. However, one of our judges felt that more could be done to change up the pacing of the video throughout. Regardless, we really enjoyed this and you are moving on to the next round!
bittermelody- We really felt the emotion that you were portraying in your entry. The voiceovers and scene choices were really well picked and helped us feel what this couple went/go through during their relationship. Your chosen effect, cross effect, was used really well and fit your style of editing throughout the whole video. Nicely done and congrats!
Nyah86Production- Congrats for not only passing this round, but for also being a judge's favorite! We really loved the story you showed in your video and how convincing it was. Whiimsy: Congratulations on being a judge's favorite for this round! First of all, we have to say that you chose the perfect song to the perfect fandom and the fact that you just decided to vid the relationship between the different doctors and their companions, only made this work very beautiful. The beginning with the simple text, quote and scenes of the police telephone box just gave some kind of really 'beginning' to the video, because after all everything start there and finish with that, it's like a symbol, so it was for sure the first thing that caught our eye. When we read the description the first thought it was 'how you were going to do this with the effect that you used', because not always people use that effect in the right way to make a good creation, you obviously did a good work. It was really eyeful to watch and beautiful in a simple way with perfect scenes and amazing transitions. Despite everything we still want to tell you that you don't necessarily need to try to follow every single beat of the song. There was no need of that, but we are glad that you participate again, on the season two and good luck for the next round.
CantRushPerfectness: We couldn't say how surprised we were when we saw that you used this fandom. It's been ages since we saw a video with that and yours was really simple and pretty at the same time. The instrumental song really worked out, making us focus more on the scenes during the 0.50 seconds. The few surreal scenes of the movie made the whole video have this hint of originality that caught the eye. The velocity did a really interesting work in this video in particular, matching the few successive beats, but it wouldn't hurt if you didn't use it a little more in a few especial parts of it. There was sometimes need of it to express the harmony between them. Anyway it was really good work and good luck for the second round.
JooFlashx: Even thinking that it was hard for you to find time to finish the video for this round, we have the pleasure to tell you that you are in for the second round of this competition. It was a really enjoyable video to watch. The song was perfect for the scenes that you used and that really gave another dynamic to video, you were really able to tell the story between the two characters in a little more than 2 minutes, using such of a great effect. Congratulations because of the great work.
OurForever22: Just two words, great video. It had dynamic and was able to tell the story in a very beautiful way. Amazing choice of the song for the fandom that you used and it really fitted the scenes that you used. It was really pretty to watch and very eyeful. The effect that you used couldn't be more perfect to the entire video, giving it a higher emotional load and a way to keep us focus and interested on the video until the end. The fact that the song had lyrics made us follow the lead of the video without think that it needed something more. It was really well done and good luck for the next round.
Forever Faraday: Amazing work. Not always in a video is there the need to match all the beats. In fact, sometimes when we do, we just mess up the entire video. That concept would be completely inappropriate here. The fact that you matched all the important beats of the tune just gave the video a new different level of action and adventure, really catching the eye from the beginning until the end. The 'gaussian blur' is not always an easy effect to use, but you did that in an original way and gave the video this surreal universe that was really interesting to watch. Let's add that using the few voices of the movie was an important step, because of sure that it wouldn't have the same effect without it and helped us to build this story around your video that helped us a lot. So it was an awesome work and good luck for the next round.
Appleipodfreak2: About your video, first we have to say that you did a perfect match between the song that you used and the fandom. Obviously, they had everything in common. Through that, we could really see the transitions between the tune and the bond between the Winchester's brothers and their adventures. It was a really interesting and original pick. The 'glow' effect was simply beautiful on it, giving the video exactly what it needed. It was a really well done video, but we have to advice you about something. A video is like a text, you have to have beginning, middle and conclusion, and you matched almost everything, but were a little carefree in the end of the video. It was an end with 'no salt' and with that I meant that we felt like the song finished abruptly. We wanted more and we didn't have it. So take that in consideration for the next round and good luck.
Tigerlily536: First of all, we are glad to see that you decided to enter this season of BOIT and congratulations for being part of the group that passed to the second round. It was a really interesting choice of effect for this video to be honest, we got mostly of them of motion blur or velocity and instead you use a banal and overused effect like cookie cutter and made your magic in a really good video. Just the beginning with small rectangles showing the song and the fandom made us want to see more of it; it was simple but perfect at the same time, obviously matched quote and all the integrity of the entire video. The song lyrics were really fitted the fandom and that's always important to make us focus in what we are watching. The way that you used your effect for example at 0:18 it was simply amazing, for sure one of the most eye-catch moments of the entire video to be honest. It gave the video a really new level. Good work.
Sunnseanicarts: First of all, congratulations for passing to the next round. "Friendship is love with understanding" and the other quote were really the base of the bond between the Doctor and Donna, you really chose two perfect quotes to two perfect characters, we really liked the idea of use those two quotes in the beginning of the video because gave an interesting way to the entire video, kind of showed us what you were going to the vid and that didn't really make us disappointed at all. The scenes were awesome, but there is something missing here. It's pretty good, but we needed something more for it to be completely flawless. It needed risk. The effect was banal, obviously matching the slow song and the emotion between the characters, but sometimes taking a risk is not bad, maybe some voices or something to break the soft rhythm of instrumental music. Anyway good work and good luck to the next round.
TheWickedMistery: We don't know what you were planning to do, since you said that you imagined this different, but we have to tell you congratulations for be part of the group that passed to the second round. It was a really interesting fandom to watch to be honest, original and unique for sure and the fact that you used the small informations in the beginning of the video just gave it a completely different way. Just the way that you matched with the scenes after and before the words was really important for us to understand the essence of the movie. 'Velocity' was just used here as a master key and made the entire video really beautiful and interesting to watch, really kept us wanting more until the end of the video. Good luck for the next round.
JennProdz: We were reading your video description and it looks like you didn't like the video that you did, so here is your chance to prove yourself for the next round. Congratulations you passed to the second round. Now first about this video. We have to admit that you did a really perfect song choice for a fandom like this. Maybe not the fandom but mostly the couple, because it fit so well with the scenes that you used and the quote in the beginning of the video was just the 'IT' for a really great start, since it really showed the meaning behind the lyrics of the song. It was a very simple video, but simple does not always mean that it is a bad video. In fact, it just made us focus on the story and gave that different emotional level. The 'effect' was just great for this, but it's very basic since when we think about emotion and effects, we obviously think about motion blur or slowed down scenes. Sometimes, taking a risk is not bad and using something different could be risky, but interesting. Still, good work and good luck.
LuckyxSammie: This was a really good song choice for this particular episode of the fandom. It matched perfectly with the scenes that you used and the entire strong and sad atmosphere around the entire video. It gave the story a completely different level of emotion. Anyway it's important to say that you did a really good choice of effect, it was different and risked, but it was kind of disappointing at the same time. There was something missing the entire video, probably because you gave us a lot in the beginning and we just wanted to see more, but instead we didn't get any of what we were hoping. Still it was a really awesome video to watch, with a pretty song, amazing scenes and mostly you followed the rules what was really important for this round. So good luck for the next round.
missfrenki - First of all, the song choice was fantastic.
