Challenge 2 'Overused songs' reviews
OurForever22: First of all congratulations for being a judge favorite! You must know that when a judge decide its favorite, that entry, automatically goes to the next round no matter how much the other two judges disliked it. Now for your entry specifically, you have to know that a judge gave it a really low grade however, your entry clearly showed a great accomplishment of the main points of this round. Even to a viewer that is not confident with the fandom, the video looks appealing and incredibly lyrics matching. Your clips selection was really great, you were able to give a true meaning to the song by reflecting the lyrics as if they were written for the pairing you chosen to portrait. The editing was simple yet beautiful and you kept a very steady but right flow trough the whole video. The 'devil' and 'angel' parts at the beginning was a little 'raw', maybe they took something from the general professionalism that it shows later, but, at the same time, it was really fitting. Another little flow was at the end of the video; you focused too much on the kisses, while you could have chosen different type of clips to shows affection between the two characters. The planets clips, the glowing part and the general little things you put to shows the 'difference' max is to liz's eyes and to the world in general, are really clever and well putted. The main point of the challenge, originality to overused song, it's clearly accomplished. Congratulations!
missfrenki: Congratulations for passing to the next round! Your video was appreciated by all the judges. It was well constructed, it feels like you showed the story really well and there are some really interesting bits in it like the repeating of the main scenes (eyes, your eyes). Even though this is quite a overused thing to do lately, you used it really well to arrive at your point. Some pieces were really 'beats concentrated' while others weren't at all and that is very visible to the viewer, it takes a little from the general flow. The voiceovers choice was really great, and the echos effect you used to them was really fitting, however they were a little too high and disturbed and it may loose some focus to what comes next. Generally the fandom chosen was original to the overused song, you clearly made your 'homework' as you mentioned in the description and it was well edited. The effect you used to the beginning colored by blue with the blue quote was incredibly fitting and it was a good call to keep using that effect sometime in the video like when you enhanced lisa's eyes. The end felt a little weird; we don't think the final clip+voiceover was needed. Even though it fits the general theme you described trough the whole video, it still would have been better to just end the video.
MytubeProductions1: Your entry was really close to be a judge favorite. Between all the people that used this song, you were by far the one that was able to make a video that made this song look with a meaning. E.T is a very shallow song if we want and it's really difficult to make a well structured video well as taking away some of the meaningless of the lyrics and the sound. Your choice for what it concern the fandom(s) was really original and so fitting! the main point of the challenge was definitely well accomplished. Your clip selection was perfect and your editing simple, yet effective. The only thing that may take something from your entry and that is pretty clear even to a non familiar editing eye, is that sometimes you were a little off to the lyrics like at 0:54 (we don't know if it was done with intention but when it says you are an alien there is a clip of batman and just a little later one of superman that it was an alien), same at 1:05 (you started a little too early with the 'slow' part). This may seems a little too picky but it actually shows a lot trough the whole video; however, your entry was one of the best of this round. Congratulations!
estaaas: Congratulations for passing trough the next round! Your video was especially liked by two judges; one it felt it was a little too repetitive at the end and you have to know that since that's how one of us felt. However, on the other side, one judge didn't agree because you actually kept it very intriguing and it was a tough call considering the 'fandom' you choose. You kept the video short, which was good, and you cutted the song very well. This could sound silly but actually abrupt endings, that happens quite a lot, are a very bad presentation to the video and we take it into account once we judge. Also, this was particularly true for your entry because the fact that you included the few lyrics of '..to show ya how the west coast rocks' are really fitting to the fandom. Even if it wasn't shot in california, that's not the point, the thing is it gave it a lot of mordant in that specific moment to that specific sport. The velocity use was great, and the end is really good. The quality and the coloring are another good aspect of this entry. However, the bigger part was the originality of your choice. We were really clear about that in the advices we gave in the site, and we think that your choice was possibly the main reason why you passed. If you were using a 'common' fandom with the same editing, it would have been different.
SweetLadyBat: We watched your video a lot of times because we were really unsure. First of all congratulations for the original choice of the fandom and, even more, the choice of creating a different storyline out of it. However, the way you constructed the video wasn't always clear. Reading your description make everything easier but watching it as it is, things starts to make sense after 1:13. After 1:13 you matched the lyrics very well by using 'your eyes, i can see in your eyes'; it was totally fitting and at that point you get the viewer very much intrigued. Also, your video was probably the best in matter of the interpretation of the 'you make me wanna die' theme. While they are usually used to portrait real killing, you totally get the lyrics and their emotional meaning is well portrayed. We'd say, in general, the lyrics interpretation was the best part of your entry, which was not very easy considering the song we are referring too (particularly impressive was the interpretation of 'and everything you love' meaning). Some manipulations were really good like at 0:19-0:24 while others less, especially since you mixed eras and costumes too much (start trek dresses, the closer bit, the black swan). Even if someone doesn't recognize all the movies you took to make the video, still something is a little off, and the video loose some of it's flawlessness. The editing was really good, you didn't fall into the usual trick of using too many effects, you kept it clean and steady trough the whole video. Congratulations you pass trough the next round!
thelostcandy: First of all the main point of the challenge was accomplished; we said to be original and you took our words very seriously. The fandom you choose was out of everything we've seen so far and you definitely got us intrigued since the very first seconds. The beginning felt a little too raw especially for the lack of quality of your screenshots and for the font choice. Still, it was already a different way of using those initial beats. After that, the editing is really well done and your use of velocity has been great especially at 0:18-0:20 and 0:33-0:35. At some points, we start seeing too many goals scenes and we are kind of getting bored while, all the sudden, you change direction and show us very different scenes. The timing was great and the internal movement usage was impressive at some point such as at: 1:09-1:10 and 0:27-0:29. We thought it would have probably been better for you to avoid the use of coloring, but using few animations (the red one is the only exception) was a good call. 0:58 was a real clever turning point in your video and it feels like the clips chosen were perfect for the way the song goes since then. The end caught us unprepared; we thought you would have ended at 1:28, but you kept going. The velocity use right after that at 1:32 felt very weird because, it didn't look good, but, considering the 'maniacal' sound the song has kind of fit. However it would have been better to avoid to use too much velocity on moving/jumping persons. The 'real' end from 1:33 was very well done, with the players matching the 'yeah' and the gesture of victory. Congratulations!
ForeverFaraday: Well, this entry wasn't anywhere near the greatness you showed us on the previous round and it was discussed a lot. However, we feel like you gave up instantly when actually the result is not that bad and it probably could have been better if you only believed in it more. Your entry was really well presented considering the esthetic of it (quality of the clips and the coloring). Your lyrics interpretation was very good in certain point, completely out in others such as at 0:06-0:10. Using the same time example as just mentioned, we were glad to see you didn't follow every single beat; you avoided to overfill the video and your editing was generally good. The only thing that felt wrong was the NB transition at 0:39-0:40. It was used too often between two close clips. In general your video was good enough to pass. Congratulations!
Nyah86production: Congrats for being a judge's favorite for this round. It can easily be said that your entry was loved by all the judges. We really liked the fact that you really took the meaning of giving us something different to look at. Everything, from the style of the video to the fandom used, was refreshingly different than the typical "west coast rocks" video. The editing throughout was well done, especially the fast clip changes at parts like 0:15 and 0:27. Your font use and voiceovers were creatively done in the video. Overall, you gave us something that was very entertaining to watch. Great job and good luck in the next round!
Cantrushperfectness - We really enjoyed what you did with your entry. It was simple but the depth that you created with just the fandom alone, really made for a emotional video. The quote that you included at the beginning really helped to set the mood for the rest of your entry. Your pacing was great and your editing went really well with the song that you were given. Despite the fact that we have seen you do better, we still really liked what you did this round. Good job and congrats on passing to the next round!
DaisyFevers - Great job on your entry this round! We really enjoyed the style of the video that you used with your given song choice. The ripple effects that were used were different from the effects that would be found in a typical "West Coast Rocks" vid. We really liked that you stepped out of the box in comparison of your usual editing style. We did have issues with the volume of the song. Despite the issue you have with sony vegas, we were hoping that you would use the extra time you had available to try to fix it. Despite that, we really did enjoy your entry. We are looking forward to your next entry!
JooFlashx - Congrats on passing to the next round! We found that your video was well done to the song that you were given. The coloring was gorgeous and your editing and pacing stayed consistent throughout the video. We will say, we were hoping for a little bit more in your entry. It felt like you kept your editing a bit tame and we wanted you to show us just how different you could make your video from the typical "ET" vid, especially since your fandom choice can be considered overused for the song that you had to edit with. Regardless, we did enjoy your entry this round. Great job!
Whiimsy - Nice job on your entry this round! We definitely found it interesting that you chose to use the Little Mermaid as your fandom choice. The idea of that fandom and the song that you were given really worked well together. However, we believe that you could have done more to really show off how different your video could be from other ET videos. The editing and scene choices were nice but still felt tame compared to what we were hoping for. We did still enjoy your entry, and because of that, you are going to the next round! Congrats!
Aloravideos - Congrats for making it to the next round! We really liked your entry this round. The coloring was great and your lyrical interpretation throughout the video was spot on. The fandom choice was an interesting pair up with the song that was given to you. We could really tell that you considered each scene that was included into your entry. It was a simple video, but still rather enjoyable. Nice job!
SolitaryAngel917 - First off, great job on picking such an original fandom for the song that you were given. The introduction that you created really helped the video start off strongly. We also liked your usage of effects, like the cookie cutter effect, which is something that we don't typically see in videos with this song choice. The way you edited the song was nicely done. It didn't feel like it abruptly ended, and the contrast from the beginning scene choice and the ending scene choice was great as well. Nice job and congrats on passing to the next round!
Kangarooinc - We found your entry to be very clever this round. The idea of turning your chosen song into a Harry Potter *video game* theme song was definitely from what we have usually seen with this song choice. The effects made the video game theme very believable and the style of the video in general was nicely done. However, your entry was given a low score by one of our judges. Despite that, we still felt that your entry was well done enough to pass to the next round. Congrats!
Shanice12OTH: The coloring and the high quality of the clips gave the video a good presentation. However we want to tell you that you did lost several points, because of the fact that you used the most obvious fandoms for this song, when you had a lot of time to think of something better and more original. We know that sometimes everything just come by you very fast when you edit, but there was no need for rushing it. The editing was simple, but good. There wasn't the need of match all the beats of the song, this is a typical mistake which you didn't fall into. The perfect scenes to match the lyrics. Congratulations on your work and good luck for the next round.
Naphie88: First of all congratulations for passing to the next round and being one of the favorite, it was a really interesting video to watch. However we have to tell you that one of the judges wasn't satisfied with your work and to her it wouldn't be enough to pass this round. So take that in consideration for the next round, and try to be careful next time, changing what was probably wrong in a way to continue in this competition. This song was very particular and it wouldn't work with all the shows and movies, yet you found a really newly and good fandom to use for the music. The scenes matched perfectly the lyrics during the entire video, but there was no need to match all the beats all the time, because in this case sometimes we couldn't exactly see who was even on the scene or what was happening because of that. The part where you matched the eyes of the wolf with the Red Riding Hood and the moment where you mixed the darkness with the lyrics were used perfectly. It was a very catchy video. You did a good work and good luck for next round.
Appleipodfreak2: Congratulations for being part of the list that passed to the next round of BOIT. It was just a surprise that you used an overused song to such of a overused fandom, because it's not the first time and won't be the last time that someone is going to make a Harry Potter video with this song. You just did that in a very interesting and original way and that caught our attention. The way that you described the characters during the video and the perfect matching quotes were the best part of your entry. The 'Always' feels like a paradox to the end of the life of the boy who lived. It was eyeful and great. Something that we need to tell you is about the quality of the clips, since sometimes it was hard see them clearly because the quality wasn't that good. That's something related to the presentation of the entry and we do consider that as well while we judge, so keep it in mind. A really good video anyway, so good luck for the next round.
Yulivee94: Your video was discussed because one judge felt it wasn't good enough to pass. The fandom/theme chosen was definitely original for this song but in general your editing was too confused. Some points were really well edited, you used some tv simulator, typical match for this song, but you also filled the entry with much more effects. The effect you ket repeating from 0:33-0:34 and again at 0:48- 0:52 was too strong and it may have been better to keep it a little more simple. Same for the huge amount of additive dissolvence used in the main beats before the chorus. However, some effects were really well delivered such as at: 0:57-1:20. It may be a good advice to slow down on some effects, perhaps re-watch your entry and figure out what it could have been deleted that, anyway, wouldn't take something less from the whole editing. The end with the letters feels very appropriate. We want to congratulate with you for the effort obviously putted in this challenge, you are going to the next round!
JennProdz: Looking at your past entries it was so clear this was a big challenge for you, still you managed to work with it pretty well. The fandom chosen is not a original choice, and it's pretty helpful as well as typical using fight scenes. However, the editing, in the whole entry has been pretty steady and well made. The overlay use (not the red one) such as at: 0:02-0:05 was a good touch. Some effects felt a little off and they took something away from the whole entry, like the wave one (0:22). The fight scenes and the internal movement were really well edited; the end was a little too sudden and the voiceover feel out of place. Anyway, your entry has been good enough to pass to the next round, you wanna perhaps consider to try again with this type of songs! Congratulations!
Fearlessprodz: First we wanted to say congratulations for being part of the list that passed to the next round. The overused song that we gave you in this round could be played with innumerable fandoms, however you chose this particular overused show, and as we mentioned it to others we have to you too. The main point was show us something original and that included especially the fandom choice. The transitions and the different colors that envolved the entire video, gave it a good dynamic. The voiceovers use and the clip selection were great. The realization of this different universe was a good plotting to match with the lyrics and the meaning of the song. When we watched your video we realized that there was a difference between the first part and the second. The blur. That happens a lot on the first part and less on the second. We advice you to watch how much blur you use on your video for the next round, because sometimes it was impossible to distinguish the scenes and the character. But anyway it was a good work and good luck for next round.
SeverusSnapehasmyhea: Generally your video was liked even though we all agree in saying it doesn't have much mordant. It feels like you didn't give too much thought into it and that's a shame since your editing was pretty good for the song given to you. Your editing was very good especially after the chorus begins, and the lyrics interpretation is well played as well. Good choice for what it concern the coloring; it definitely capture the mood of the song. The end comes too soon after the big break of the chorus; even though you cutted the song pretty well it still feels like an abrupt ending. There isn't much to say about your entry, just we liked the editing and we were hoping for more. Congratualtions for passing the round, we still felt that it was right for you to pass!
missfrenki: Congratulations for passing to the next round! Your video was appreciated by all the judges. It was well constructed, it feels like you showed the story really well and there are some really interesting bits in it like the repeating of the main scenes (eyes, your eyes).
